Kennedy, Langevin Announce LIHEAP Funding for Rhode Island

October 22, 2009

Washington, DC - Congressmen Patrick J. Kennedy and Jim Langevin announced today that the Department of Health and Human Services released $22,186,153 to assist the state's low income citizens with their heating bills this winter. These funds will help about 30,000 Rhode Island families under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

"I am pleased these federal dollars have been released early to help Rhode Island families keep their homes warm this winter. LIHEAP helps ease the burden on household budgets which are already strained," said Kennedy.

"With this funding, Rhode Island social service agencies will be able to offer assistance to some of their neediest clients," said Langevin. "I am a strong supporter of LIHEAP funding and truly believe it is a vital program that for so many in our state can mean the only opportunity for a warm night’s sleep."

LIHEAP helps eligible families pay the costs of heating and insulating their homes in the winter, and cooling their homes in the summer. HHS is releasing such a large allocation of LIHEAP funds now in order to ensure that states have resources available to support their energy assistance programs as the weather turns colder.
